Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, Spiderman), is confirmed to have signed on to direct a live-action film adaptation of the popular massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft by Blizzard Entertainment. In addition, it is also reported that producer Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) is also on board with the project.
First reported by AICN and later confirmed by Variety, the plan – according to Variety – will be for Raimi to supervise development of the film by Legendary Pictures and Blizzard Entertainment with co-sponsorship and distribution by Warner Bros.
The deal apparently reopens a long dormant pact by Legendary Pictures and Blizzard Entertainment to produce such a film about Blizzard’s flagship product.
“At its core, ‘Warcraft’ is a fantastic, action-packed story,” Raimi said in a statement.
The World of Warcraft universe features an epic struggle between warring factions, Alliance (Humans) and Horde (Orc). The game has developed a massive 11.5 million-subscriber following since it’s first launch in 1994, with no signs of slowing down.
No release date for the film has as yet been provided.
