News from Hollywood fresh off the presses of THR
Columbia has hired scribes Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara to pen the sequel to the Will Smith superhero movie, which grossed $624 million worldwide last year. The original producing team is expected to return.
Maybe these new writers will bring the soul to this franchise that the first one lacked. Don’t get me wrong, I think I was one of the only people who liked Hancock. Everyone seemed to talk trash about it in the reviews and everyone I know thought it sucked, I disagree. I think Hancock is a perfect original character to show an origin of and perhaps even give him some supercharged enemies to rumble with. There is an endless amount of possibilities for script and film development.
The thing is, all the other super hero films have maintained an amount of integrity to them based soley on the fact that they all had one major thing going for them; a history and a fanbase.
Ironman, Batman, Hulk, Spiderman, X-Men and Wolverine all had major anticipation coupled with their releases and that high anticipation brought with it, high grosses. Hancock grossed a significant amount, yes, but garnered a fair amount of bad press. I think we can expect another high payday for the sequel but they really need to dig deep to get the respect they deserve. It’s a great premise, now it’s time to amp up the quality.
