“Remember When” Narc was a Controversial Arcade Game- And Wasting Tons of Homeless Junkies for Their Cocaine Was Just Your Job!!!
(Check out a few minutes of The Original Arcade Gem here and relive when video games were video games!! Amazing what they got away with back then!!!)
NARC, one of my first steps into the dark arcades in 1988! With pure joy, I would literally pump quarter after quarter in and gun down balding, fat, hunched over, brown bathrobe wearing junkies. As you (Max Force or Hit Man, Amazing 80’s hero names!!) are swarmed by dozens of the same bad guy and you are uziing them down stacks of cash fall for you to confiscate as well as bags of cocaine or needles of heroine!!! This is what I was playing when I was 8! Back then I was unphased by the absolute, not just mature content, but rediculously innappropriate themes… It’s freaking me out now, more then back then!
The player controls either Max Force or Hit Man, who are hunting down junkies, drug dealers and organized crime kingpins. Max and Hit are equipped with an automatic weapon and missile launcher. When an enemy is dispatched using the latter, they explode in a torrent of scorched and bloody body appendages. Some enemies can be arrested after they surrender and then float away with “BUSTED” over them, this is then added to your tally at the end of the level along with drugs and money confiscated from other enemies that they dropped when killed (the game actually awards more points at the end of a round for arresting enemies without killing them). The game’s objective is to reach and destroy various drug dealing ringleaders.
So step back 21 years and see what it was like when the term political correct was in some grunge highschool students head who hadn’t grown out her armpit hair and dreads and go to college with a protesting megaphone! No. Arcades hadn’t been touched yet and all was well in the universe…Like smacking your wife over uncooked dinner, it was all good and everyone was happy……j/k
