I like many of you have been bombarded by commercials for CW’s new Sci-Fi show “The Vampire Diaries”. Like many of you my first reaction was “This is such a rip off of Twilight and CW is just cashing in on the vampire craze”. Well the later part might be true I’ve just discovered I am an ignorant fool. Vampire Diaries is series of novels by author L.J. Smith and actually pre-empted Twilight by over a decade. The first book was published in 1991. The story centers around Elena Gilbert, a high school girl torn between two vampire brothers. I know I’ve hurt my nerd cred by not knowing this, but I think keeping my distance from tween romance novels is a fair excuse. Vampire Diaries the TV series may be yet another thinly vailed soap opera but perhaps we should give it the benefit of the doubt. It is being written by Kevin Williamson. He, of course, wrote the Scream trilogy and wrote/created/produced the hit television series Dawson’s Creek, which launched the careers of Joshua Jackson (Fringe), Michelle Williams (Halloween H20), Katie Holmes (Batman Begins) and James Van Der Beek (The Storm).
The Vampire Diaries will premiere on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Will be sure to check it out and let you know what we thought.
