Felicia Day, everyone’s favorite nerdgirl who apparently can do no wrong, has been cast as the lead in an upcoming original movie for the SyFy channel. Cue geekgasms everywhere.
Day, who stars in the web series “The Guild” and has been featured in “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” will star in SyFy’s reimagining of the classic Little Red Riding Hood story. Titled “Red,” the TV movie is scheduled for a 2011 television release. I’m really, really trying not to make dumb puns about Day’s hair, her character and the movie’s title. It’s hard.
Here’s some info from the official release:
In the action-packed Red, Red (Day) brings her fiancé home, where he meets the family and learns about their business – hunting werewolves. He’s skeptical until bitten by a werewolf. When her family insists he must be killed, Red tries saving him. Red also stars Kavan Smith (Stargate Atlantis) and Stephen McHattie (Watchmen).
When I read the release, I had to scrutinize it to make sure that God-Of-All-That-Is-Fantastic Joss Whedon wasn’t attached. The plot point about two very different people-things in love having to make a choice to kill or die sounds a wee bit like the end of “Buffy” season 2, no? Do you selfishly keep your love, or do you murder him for the good of the world?
SyFy has retold a number of classic stories and fairy tales in recent years, and they’ve been pretty good, so I’m sold on “Red.” However, SyFy also produces a number of awesomely awful B-movies such as “Pterodactyl” and “Minotaur.” How do you think “Red” will turn out?
