As most of you know the big news this week and perhaps most epic nerd news ever is that the George Lucas of TV, Joss Whedon (“is in final negotiations to helm Marvels “The Avengers“. Except for the few Whedon haters out there the majority of the nerd community is most certainly rejoiceful over this news. Biggest fanboy gets to direct the biggest event in comic book movie history. Honestly, how exciting is that? However, Joss Whedon is more celebrated for his writing and character development more so than he is praised for his directing. When news broke that he’s going to be leading the biggest super hero movie of all time the initial reaction, by fans was that he should be writing it instead. Well, turns out, he’s doing that too!
Variety reports that while Marvel Studios is wrapping up the Whedon deal he will also be reworking the script by Zak Penn. When Marvel hired seasoned super hero movie writer, Zak Penn (X-Men 2 & 3, Incredible Hulk) they made it clear that they want wanted “The Avengers” to be connected to all the pre-establishing work that’s been set up in “The Incredible Hulk“, “Iron Man” and the upcoming Captain America and Thor movies. The films share the same universe and the cameos and tying in elements have been a subtle build up to the formation of the Avengers. Pulling everything together, on top of writing a good script about a diverse group of super heroes that learn to play as a team has been no easy take for the writer. Enter master story teller Joss Whedon. Stating the obvious, Joss Whedon is known for his acute sense of character as well as knowing how to ensemble a cast. If Zach Penn is having trouble capturing the persona’s of Captain America, Thor and Iron, while honoring Marvels interconnectivity approach, on top of writing a compelling story then Joss is here to save the day. His supposed revisions to Penns script, from a character and story perspective is sure to make an Avengers movie appropriate for the fans (See his work on Astonishing X-Men for a prime example). Of course the jury is still out on whether or not Whedon has the chops to direct the grandest super movie of all time. Only time will tell.
On a side note. With Whedon re-working Zak Pens script does this mean will get a song and dance scene with Thor ala Dr. Horrible style? God I hope so!
