Hey it’s a Tuesday and it’s 4/20, maybe there is a movie coming out today that’ll be totally far out and help some of ya’ll “enhanced” day. To be honest, not much out this week and like always, we here at NerdBastards will list out what came out and say whether if it’s a BUY, RENT, or PASS. We’ll have the the “Old Stuff is New” section and no Anime DVD Pick of the Week (Sorry, I’m not going to recommend Naruto: Shippuden). Also, there is this one film that comes out Thursday because it’s some special thing that like many people loved but it’ll be missing something when it comes out, which you can find out what I’m talking about after the jump.BUY (Only if you don’t already own it)
Xena Warrior Princess Season 1 Box Set & Hercules: The Legendary Journeys
Xena: Warrior Princess – Xena, a mighty warrior and healer, once led a band of outlaws that terrorized all of Greece. She has come to regret the harm she caused and, with her companion Gabrielle, now travels the countryside seeking adventure and fighting the forces of evil.
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys – Hercules, the son of Zeus and a mortal woman, Alcmene. Given to tempestuous fits of anger, Hercules decides to control his rage once and for all by using his supernatural abilities for the good of man. Along with his friend Iolaus, Hercules roams the Earth to fight mythological monsters and help humanity.
Although this should probably fall under the Old Stuff is New Again section, I thought I should do it justice and put it on the BUY section, because really, these are two awesome series. Apparently the old box sets has been discontinued for some time now and now we get the re-releases. Regardless, it’s freaking Xena and Hercules, and if you were a nerd during the 90’s, you either watched one of the series or both. The Xena 5 disk set comes with 24 episodes while the Hercules 3 disk set comes with 13 episodes. If you don’t already own this, this is definitely worth the buy and worth checking out.
The Lovely Bones
The Lovely Bones centers on a young girl who has been murdered and watches over her family – and her killer – from heaven. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal.
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Michael Imperioli, and Saoirse Ronan.
Director: Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, King Kong)
A movie that most people pulled the “The book is better” card and was met with mixed reviews, mostly negative, The Lovely Bones is still worth checking out and that is why it’s a rent. While the story will make you want more out of, the CG scenes of heaven on Blu-Ray is something to check, especially if ya want a trip on 4/20. Either way, it’s not a completely bad film, just Peter Jackson could have done more with the film. Also, check out NerdBastards review on the film to further make your decision.
The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie!
When the mystery-solving musician, Foxxy Love, notices she and her fellow housemates can curse without being bleepedsomething they’ve never been able to do before, she realizes that their show has been canceled. Determined to get back on the air, the gang ventures to such far-off lands as Bedrock, a Fairy Tale Village and the fantastical Make A Point Land, all the while outrunning their enemies, who are hell bent on keeping them off the air and are prepared to use any means necessary to do so.
Starring: Adam Carolla, Jess Harnell, Abbey DiGregorio, Jack Plotnick, Tara Strong, Cree Summer, James Arnold Taylor, Seth MacFarlane.
Director: Greg Franklin
A canceled show has a movie coming out and it’s uncensored, sure we’ve had some of those lately. To me, Drawn Together was entertaining whenever I had it on as it parodies many cartoons and videogame series that I can remember and takes the parodies to as far as it, which may have turned off some of it’s audience. The show deserves a chance to be checked out and hey, the movie has Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) guest starring. Plus, being all “enhanced” today, this show will be funny as hell. The DVD is available everywhere, however, the Blu-Ray is only available over at Best Buy and hey, it’s a few bucks cheaper than the DVD version over at their site.
Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean, a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. As he struggles down the road of redemption, Bad learns the hard way just how tough life can be on one man’s crazy heart.
Starring: Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Robert Duvall, Collin Farrell, and Sarah Jane Morris.
Director: Scott Cooper
Hey it’s the dude, why is this a pass? Well, it seems to me that it’s one of those washed up singer tries to do something good late in his life story and yeah, country music. I’m only recommending a pass because, even if your on something, I don’t this will make ya a fan of country music. If it matters, the Blu-Ray version does have two more deleted scenes than what the DVD has and it seems to be a alternative thing.
Old Movies Are New Again: This is the section where I list out what is being re-released into Blu-Ray, which is mainly old movies getting a Blu-Ray treatment. Those movies are:
Batman (20th Anniversary Edition)
Batman & Robin
Too Special To Come Out On Tuesday
Jake Sully is a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. But despite his broken body, Jake is still a warrior at heart. He is recruited to travel light years to the human outpost on Pandora, where a corporate consortium is mining a rare mineral that is the key to solving Earth’s energy crisis. Because Pandora’s atmosphere is toxic, they have created the Avatar Program, in which human “drivers” have their consciousness linked to an avatar, a remotely-controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These avatars are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the natives of Pandora… the Na’vi. Reborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate the Na’vi, who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. But a beautiful Na’vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake’s life, and this changes everything. Jake is taken in by her clan, and learns to become one of them, which involves many tests and adventures. As Jake’s relationship with his reluctant teacher Neytiri deepens, he learns to respect the Na’vi way and finally takes his place among them. Soon he will face the ultimate test as he leads them in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.
Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang, and Matt Gerald.
Director: James Cameron (Aliens, The Terminator)
Yes folks, this film will be out Thursday and not today because it want’s to be part of Earth Day. You can get it on DVD or Blu-Ray…but this is where you make your own decision. There will be no 3D version of it available and I’m sure most of you that liked the film would like to experience the 3D once again, but if most reports indicate, it probably won’t be till sometime next year when we’ll get to see a 3D version of the film when 3D TV’s will already be in the market. Anyways, if you still want to experience this, then the Blu-Ray version should be your choice, other than that, I got nothing more to say. Also check out both NerdBastards reviews of Avatar.
