SciFiWire reports that Marvel officially announced that nerd franchise favorite Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Transformers) will play the sinister Red Skull opposite Chris Evans as Captain America in next year’s Captain America: The First Avenger.
The movie, directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, The Wolfman), will focus on Cap’s origin and early career in World War II. It’s set to come out July 22, 2011, a few months after Thor and a bit less than a year before The Avengers.
In case you aren’t familiar with Captain America’s enemies, the Red Skull was once a bellhop named Johann Shmidt. He was trained by Adolf Hitler himself to become the ultimate Nazi and was given a creepy-ass red skull mask to terrorize the masses. He became Captain America’s arch-enemy, and the two have been fighting ever since, thanks to suspended animation, body transferal, and other life-prolonging coincidences, which is handy when you consider they started fighting each other in the 1940s.
Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that this movie will be better than the other attempts at bringing Cap to the screen, TV or movie.
