DVD Tuesday 6/15/10

It’s already another Tuesday for the month of June, which means another release of DVDs/Blu-Rays. We here at NerdBastards make a list of what comes out and recommend if ya should either BUY, RENT, or PASS. As always, we have the Old is New section, just in case you may have wanted a HD upgrade of your favorite movie/show and we have the TV Show DVD section as well. No LOL Release of the Week this time, which is a shame. Anyway, check after the jump to see what came out.

The Book of Eli

In the not-too-distant future, some 30 years after the final war, a solitary man walks across the wasteland that was once America. A warrior not by choice but necessity, Eli seeks only peace but, if challenged, will cut his attackers down before they realize their fatal mistake. It’s not his life he guards so fiercely but his hope for the future; a hope he has carried and protected for 30 years and is determined to realize. Driven by this commitment and guided by his belief in something greater than himself, Eli does what he must to survive–and continue. Eli must keep moving to fulfill his destiny and bring help to a ravaged humanity. Only one other man in this ruined world understands the power Eli holds, and is determined to make it his own: Carnegie.

Starring: Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Jennifer Beals, Frances de la Tour, Michael Gambon, and Evan Jones.
Directed by: Albert & Allen Hughes (From Hell, Menace II Society)

Did you know that this film was written by Gary Whitta, who used to be a game journalist and is a story writer for video games (Gears of War, Prey). Not bad for a first time Hollywood writer to have Denzel Washington ad Gary Oldman in the film. Anyway, the film is pretty decent but it may be on the long side. At least you have the sexy Mila Kunis to look at during the film. The Blu-Ray comes with a picture-in-picture commentary that may interest some of you and also, an animated short that expands the story.

Available: Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy Combo, DVD

Youth in Revolt

Youth in Revolt is the story of Nick Twisp – a unique, but affable teen with a taste for the finer things in life like Sinatra and Fellini – who falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful, free-spirited Sheeni Saunders while on a family vacation. But family, geography and jealous ex-lovers conspire to keep these two apart. With Sheeni’s encouragement, Nick abandons his dull, predictable life and develops a rebellious alter ego: Francois. With his ascot, his moustache and his cigarette, Francois will stop at nothing to be with Sheeni, and leads Nick Twisp on a path of destruction with unpredictable and uproarious consequences.

Starring: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Steve Buscemi, Justin Long, Ray Liotta, Jean Smart, Fred Willard, and Zach Galifianakis.
Directed by: Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl, Chuck & Buck)

Whether you like him or not, Michael Cera will be around for a long time. Who knows, though, maybe this movie will help ya change your mind about the actor. With Justin Long, Steve Buscemi, and Zack Galifanakis in the film as well, they help make this already short comedy go by faster, it may be something to enjoy for a date night. Both the Blu-Ray and DVD has its fair share of extras with the Blu-Ray having that extra movieIQ+ sync.

Available: Blu-Ray, DVD

When in Rome

An ambitious young New Yorker, disillusioned with romance, takes a whirlwind trip to Rome where she defiantly plucks magic coins from a “foolish” fountain of love, inexplicably igniting the passion of an odd group of suitors: a sausage magnate, a street magician, an adoring painter and a self-admiring model. But when a charming reporter pursues her with equal zest, how will she know if his love is the real thing?

Starring: Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel, Bobby Moynihan, Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard, Danny DeVito, and Anjelica Huston.
Directed by: Mark Steven Johnson (Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Simon Birch)

While Kristen Bell is always nice to look at, it’s not worth it to watch this film. Sure, it may have Will Arnett, Dax Shepard, and Danny DeVito in the film but even they couldn’t save this film. Just try to avoid it if ya can but if you do end up having to watch this, try checking out the extras as it has a fair amount of it and has more material from Shepard and DeVito to watch.

Available: Blu-Ray, DVD

Johnny Bravo: Season One

Johnny Bravo revolves around a muscular beefcake blonde young man with black sunglasses and shirt, blue jeans, a pompadour hairstyle and Elvis Presley-like tone of voice personality. Plots typically resolve around him trying to get a woman, that he has targeted throughout the episode, to fall in love with him. He is often beat up or stunned by his target or companions, or gets ditched by them in the end. Due to his narcissistic and dim-witted traits he tends to be attracted to any woman.

Available: 2 Disk DVD Set

The first two DVD sets are for any Seth MacFarlane fan and hey, the American Dad set comes with a drinking game and the Family Guy set comes with an awesome Karaoke mode for their past musical moments, which I’m sure drinking will help make that extra fun. As for the MacGyver DVD, if your a fan and didn’t buy the Ultimate Collection set and have been buying the season sets individually, well, this is your chance to complete your collection. For the last set, just seeing this DVD set coming out makes me want to do the monkey. If we support this release, maybe Cartoon Network will release their other cartoons like Dexter’s Laboratory or 2 Stupid Dogs. I know I’ll try to support this just so I can maybe, one day, get my hands on a Swatkats DVD set.
