Ahhhh, Marvel – it appears you really know what you are doing, doesn’t it?
With Iron Man 2 a hit, Thor being filmed, and Captain America: First Avenger coming along, it is only natural that rumors begin to swirl about who will play who in the upcoming The Avengers movie.
Rumors have circled around two actors for the roles of Hank Pym (aka “Ant-Man”), and his wife, Janet van Dyne (aka “The Wasp”).
Nathan Fillion, whom any nerd worth his salt knows from TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Castle, has been a fan demand ever since Joss Whedon was rumored to direct the picture (he has since been confirmed). Fillion’s name has been thrown about for the role of Hawkeye as well, but it appears he is a lock for Dr. Pym.
Eva Longoria, best known for playing Gabrielle on ABC’s Desperate Housewives, has long been rumored for the role of “The Wasp” since she left Marvel offices in the summer of 2008 with an arm full of comic books.
It is worth noting that since The Avengers movie will be so big, they may not be more than scientists with a few scenes together. But, the hope is that they will sign a multi-film deal and star in a movie together. The casting news will most likely be confirmed or denied at the San Diego Comic-Con late next month.
For those who don’t know the characters that well, here is a brief biography of each.
Dr. Henry Pym, a brilliant scientist, discovers what are known as “Pym particles.” These particles can allow an individual to shrink or expand in size. After accidentally shrinking himself and encountering some ants, he designed a cybernetic helmet that granted him control over the ants, dubbing himself “Ant-Man.” Through a series of events, he met Janet van Dyne, and after some courtship and dating, they wed. Their marriage was rocky, but they persevered.
Pym is one of the smartest men in the Marvel universe, but that has not stopped him from having his own personal demons to deal with. Over the years, Pym has donned many different identities including “Giant Man,” “Yellowjacket,” and many more.
Janet van Dyne was a socialite, and met Henry Pym after the death of her father, a noted scientist and associate of Pym’s. After her father’s death, Janet convinced Henry to help her turn into someone who could help people. Pym gave her some “Pym particles” that allowed her to shrink, a procedure that allowed her to grow wings and fly, as well as the ability to fire energy blasts (which she called “stings”).
