Edi Gathegi, best known for playing Laurent in the Twilight films (is it sad that I knew that w/o having to look it up?) has signed on to join the cast of Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class. He has been cast in the role of Darwin. Who? The character was created by writer Ed Brubaker and artist Pete Woods, and he first appeared in X-Men: Deadly Genesis #2. According to Marvel’s reference website, he has “limitless mutation abilities being in a state of continual reaction, adapting to whatever his current situation demands.”
Gathegi will join James McAvoy as Xavier, Mike Fassbender as Magneto ,Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee, Alice Eve as Emma Frost, Lucas Till as Havok, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique and Kevin Bacon as -?- (unknown villain)
All this casting is certainly promising, but with so many characters, and with the film being an origin story for all players involved it is a bit disconcerting. How many character can a superhero movie sustain and still give each enough screen time that we get to know and care about them? It just seems like an awful lot of characters to cram into one storyline. We could do with one less Twilight douche.
