Earlier this month, news kicked back up again that Robert Rodriguez was still in talks to direct the long awaited X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off Deadpool, but gossip around the water cooler speculated that the director would be too busy with other projects. And, while that remains to be seen it has been reported that Rodriguez has endorsed the project and has commented on his involvement. In a recent interview with Hero Complex, Rodriguez said of the Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (writers of Zombieland) screenplay, “It’s a great script and a great property.” In regards to his potential involvement, the director admitted to having taken part in meetings with 20th Century Fox about directing the film.  However, he remained resolute that nothing is official and that his next directorial effort is still undecided.

This from Hero Complex…

Rodriguez, who just finished the final sound mix of “Machete,” sounded gung ho about “Deadpool” but added that he is still debating his next project. “I’m just working everything out,” Rodriguez said, noting that he is choosing between three options for his next directing job. He said one is the long-discussed “Sin City 2” but he declined to name the other, though it could be “Nerveracker,” a far-future thriller that was announced last year but hasn’t moved as quickly as anticipated.
I’m gonna have to say this….if its between Deadpool and Sin City 2 go with DEADPOOL. Deadpool is witty with bloody violence and balls to the walls action. And no director has a penchant for bloody violence and and balls to the walls action like Robert Rodriguez does. He’s the man for the job.
Besides waiting to hear what Rodriguez official outlook is, a Deadpool movie is in limbo for other reasons. Namely Ryan Reynolds and Warner Bros. Sources say that the WB doesn’t want Reynolds to be Deadpool and also be the Green Lantern. An obvious conflict of interest. Depending on the success of Green Lantern WB plans to lock Reynolds in with immediate back to back sequels and do all they can to prevent him from rerprising his role as the “merc with the mouth”.
Without Reynolds there really can’t be a Deadpool movie. Sure FOX could just recast, but Reynolds portrayel of the character is what warranted a spin-off in the first place. Moving forward without him would just be stupid.
