We’ve all been part of a fan club at some point in our lives. You all payed to join with the expectation that your hero or heroines would respond to you…the fan. In the case of then 8 year- old Teresa Juniso who back in 1988 sent off $12 to Wil Wheaton’s WILPOWER fanclub and waited. Boy did she wait. She never recieved her membership to Wil’s personal fanclub. 21 years later however, Wil Wheaton himself, star of Star Trek: TNG gave the now 29 year-old Teresa her full membership- along with one of the most sincerest apology letters ever written.
After hearing only last year that his now defunct fan club had crushed a then young fans dreams (monsters!) he somehow found a complete Membershit kit. He then proceeded to send along with the kit, a letter to the then 8 year-old Teresa. The letter included:
Dear 8 year-old Teresa,
I wanted to apologize to you for making you wait so long to get your official WilPower fanclub membership kit. You see, 15 year-old me is very busy with work and school, and the people who were responsible for getting your membership kit mailed back to you must have made a mistake.
It’s been a long time since the fan club did anything, but I’ve enclosed a membership car for you, as well as a wallet photo, and a picture that shows you how much I love Batman (HINTL It’s a lot)
Now that’s a class act from a guy people didn’t even like early on in The Next Generation (see: alt.wesley.crusher.die.die.die). It really shows how far some people will go to please a fan, even 21 years later. This must be why he created Wheaton’s law, he follows his own rule “Don’t be a dick”.
Check out the full letter after the jump
