Another day, another fan film. Nerdy bastard Mark Cheng (don’t let his last name fool you, he’s a real American hero) has taken our beloved 1980’s G.I. Joe and made a short, live-action trailer out of it for a proposed 15 minute fan film. The trailer for G.I. Joe Special Missions: Operations Red Retrieval is actually pretty well made and pretty darn cool. Of course, I suppose anything looks like gold compared to G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. It may be a bit violent and missing the classic “knowing is half the battle” PSA, but it does a fair job of capturing the essence of G.I. Joe. It totally put a smile on my nerd face to see a live-action Snake Eyes and Zartan in cartoon accurate costumes. Plus the blood was wicked pissah too (I’m from Boston, can’t you tell?)
If you liked this, you might want to check out the ’80s tribute teaser as well — it’s a lot of the same footage, but a different, albeit familiar, soundtrack.
