The Bill and Ted movies are nostalgic 80’s films that touch our nerdy taints in ways no other 80’s movies can. Time travel, bodacious music, narly dim witted dudes, George Carlin, the grim reaper, Station and “The babes”. Man, that shit never gets old. The rewatchability of these middle brow comedies are extremely high. Toss me a bowl and some munchies and I’m like “Wyld Stallyns!!!”. Anyway, us nerdy stoners have clamored for a third installment for years. And, for years both Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter (Bill and Ted) have teased at the idea at doing another one. It was the launching pad for both their careers, so of course the idea of going back to their roots has been an appealing one. Nostalgia is one thing, but to actually start considering a 3rd movie? Well, that’s exactly what these two have in mind. Some serious talk between the two has started to emerge. Recently, Keanu Reeves said during the Toronto Film Festival: “I’d love to play the role, I’d love to work with Alex [Winter] and [writers] Chris and Ed again, we’ll see what they do”. That off hand comment certainly got the net speaking, but it at the end of the day wasn’t really a sign that a 3rd movie was moving forward.
But, NOW Alex Winter says there is indeed an idea in play for a third film. And, not just an idea, but that a script is underway…RIGHT NOW!
Alex “I Look Like I Smelled a Fart” Winter said to MTV,
We kicked around the idea over the years and had always thought if we could make something that was as kind of genuine in spirit as the originals and without falling prey to kind of retro cynicism or something that was unnecessary, it would be worth doing…the truth is that, yeah, we have finally hit upon an idea that we think is pretty great. We’ve been working on it for the past couple of years, honing that idea and getting it into shape.
Ahhhh, did you hear that? Bill and Ted 3: The Radical Quest for More Money (I just made that title up) is underway!!!!! Woo hoo!!!!
I’m really interested to see what kind of story the quartet (Reeves, Winters, and writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon) have in mind. Bill and Ted have been to the future, been to the past. They’ve been to heaven and they’ve been to hell. Where do they go from here? On our 24th podcast we asked this very question and podcast contributor Christine Foley suggested that maybe Bill and Ted’s kids are grown up, and are lame. Nothing like their fathers. Bill and Ted need to take them through time to show them Rock and Roll and what it means to be a dude. Besides that, I really don’t see what else Bill and Ted could do. I also have concern that Bill and Ted is a movie that worked well in it’s day and might have trouble recapturing it’s same zainy, comedic spirit. Regardless, I’m sure the move to go forward with Bill and Ted 3 will no longer make Keanu Reeves sad. And, also maybe wipe that sour look off Alex Winters face.
