A while back we heard that Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler) was approached for the director chair of Wolverine 2. Being that he’s name has been beat around Hollywood like a $5 hooker the rumor wasn’t taken that seriously. After all, his name has been dropped for every other, highly anticipated, nerd movie (Batman 3, Preacher, Superman Reboot). It seemed more like nerd wishful thinking rather then legimate news.

Well now, since he’s out of the running for Superman (Zach Snyder got the job, in case you didn’t know) it’s been reported, by Vulture,  that 20th Century Fox has indeed offered the directing role for the next Wolverine movie to Mr. Aronofsky.

Until last weekend, though, Aronofsky was far more interested in directing WB’s original take on Superman — in which Clark Kent is a journalist traveling the world trying to decide if he should, in fact, even become Superman — than doing a sequel like Wolverine 2. But on Saturday, Aronofsky was informed by WB he was out of the running for Man of Steel, and suddenly directing a sequel didn’t seem so bad. Today, his reps began negotiations with Fox to put him behind the camera for Wolverine 2.

If he takes the job, he’ll be directing a script by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) which puts Wolverine in “a love story featuring a Japanese actress“, possibly an adaptation of the Mariko Yashida storyline.

I still can’t take this seriously. Who knows, maybe he has been offered the gig, but, I can’t see him realistically taking the job. 1. He’s a directer that takes his time and doesn’t like to be restrained. It’s his way and that’s it. A guy that spends months trying to get a film just right. FOX being controlling douchebags, at-least with their super hero franchises won’t allow for this kind of artistic freedom. The two just don’t mix (unless it’s for a FOX Searchlight Pic. like The Wrestler). 2. Does he really wanna be the guy to follow up X-Men Origins: Wolverine, perhaps the worst superhero movie of all time (oh, that “I’ll shoot him in the head to make him forget” scene angers me greatly)?Honestly, who wants that come stain on their career?
