This idea sounds pretty damn cool actually and the role certainly is fitting for Depp to play. Johnny Depp will be working alongside long time collaborator Tim Burton, in reviving a television series from the 60’s called Dark Shadows. The show, about a 175 year old vampire named Barnabus who is locked away in his coffin by his father and once finally breaks free has to lie to his present day relatives about who he really is, will be brought to the big screen by this dynamic duo in 2011. Set to potentially do the script is Seth Graham-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) The plot sounds just twisted, dark and funny enough for these two to make it into something great. The plot sounds pretty fun and genious and whille the whole Vampire fad is kind of growing tiresome this project could definitely breath some life (not that it would bring it back to life but just give it some color in the cheeks) of the whole vampire fad. Depp, of course will be playing Barnabus and here’s what he had to say about the project:
“Tim and I have tossed the idea for Dark Shadows over the years. It was a TV program in the States in the late 60s and early 70s that I remember watching as a kid. I was obsessed with this character, Barnabas Collins, who was a vampire. I came to find out many years later that when he was a kid, Tim ran home like I did to watch that Gothic soap opera. It was a very strange thing back then.We looked at ways to go, story-wise. We’ve started to come up with something interesting.”
Another great thing about the project is that Burton and Depp will have plenty of material to go off of. The original series was revamped in 1991 by NBC and then again in 2004 by the CW. Hopefully, there will inventive and interesting ideas to pull from and put together for the big screen. Granted Depp’s career while remaining a stand out performer has gone somewhat soft (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland and most recently, The Tourist), Dark Shadows actually seems like a great project for Depp to embark on.
