Blastr reports that according to director extraordinaire Peter Jackson, back in the day, the Beatles were itching to make a LOTR live-action film, with John Lennon as Gollum, Paul McCartney as Frodo, George Harrison as Gandalf, and Ringo Starr as Sam.
J.R.R. Tolkien had film rights at the time, and he put the kibosh on the project, which I suppose is just as well, given how “Magical Mystery Tour” turned out. Still, it would’ve been trippy. Would there have been an accompanying soundtrack?
What I don’t get is that a Beatles-headlined LOTR got shot down, but this somehow saw the light of day (Disclosure: I love the hell out of this song):
