So I’ve gotta say- much like when I’ve watched certain episodes of Joss Whedon’s beloved show Buffy The Vampire Slayer and my jaw dropped, the reaction was quite similar when I heard about this reboot nonsense. Warner has decided to go on with the project being penned by Whit Anderson without Joss Whedon (it’s original creator) or Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the titled character. Oh boy, does this just sound like a mess.
The situation is vaguely similar to what is going on with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. A Swedish version has been created and now David Fincher is attempting an American version. I am torn about how I feel about things that already have a set vision and impact on society being tampered with. On the one hand, the saying “leave well enough alone” comes to mind. But on the other hand isn’t worth taking the risk of trying and possibly ending up with something good??
As far as Buffy is concerned, I’m particularly wary because first and foremost, Joss in a visionary master and he is an incredible writer so this will be quite the daunting task for Whit to follow. And while many of you may consider Gellar an uber bitch she owned the role of Buffy (probably due to her fierce attitude) so it will be extremely hard to picture someone else in the role.
With that said the man behind the Slayer has finally spoken out and here’s what he had to say as far as the reboot in concerned,
“A sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.”
Oh wait, he’s not done yet. Whedon continued to drive the stake right through the heart of the new Buffy project by saying,
“I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.”
Wow, fucking take that Warner!
So I KNOW there are die hard Buffy fans out there strictly opposed to this idea but do you all think this thing shouldn’t happen? Does anyone think Whedon is sort of being pretentious by thinking that no one should try to re-envision his work??
