Mark Webb’s (haha…’Web”) Spider-man reboot continues it’s casting.
All the big roles and names (Like Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, and Sally Field as Aunt May) have been announced, but there is many more roles to fill. While we still await on J. Jonah Jameson (Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Bugle, Parker’s Boss and hater of Spider-man) and whoever the villain is going to be (Rhys Ifans has been rumored for the Lizard) there have been lesser-known characters cast, a trio of obscure characters to be precise.
Campbell Scott and Julianne Nicholson will play Mary and Richard Parker, Peter’s rarely-seen parents. While Irrfan Khan (Slumbdog Millionaire) will play D-List Z-List bad guy Van Atter.
Who the deuce is Van Atter? Likely he’s a reference to Nels Van Adder, a character who appeared in only one Spider-Man comic, 1997’s Peter Parker, Spider-Man 1. In this comic, Norman Osborn transforms Van Adder, his lab assistant, into the “Proto-Goblin,” a rusty red shit precursor to the Green Goblin.
Casting Parkers parents is certainly interesting. In the Spider-man lore they are never-seen and barely mentioned. They were C.I.A double agents who perished doing some spy shit. Thus explaining the guardianship of Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Later life Model Decoy clones once came back to give Peter severe emotional stress (stupid).
I really hope they don’t play too much into the C.I.A, spy parent stuff. On the other hand it could be a way to connect Spider-man to all of Marvel films, released and upcoming. Parkers parents were killed by the Red Skull. Bone head of course is Captain America’s big bad. So, maybe they’re playing into that. Hopefully like all inter-connection references it will be brief.
