At the Wat Rong Khun Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand, Batman, Ultraman, and other scifi heroes are inexplicably hanging out in religious paintings.
Western art having an impact on Buddhist aesthetics… well, that’s just unexpectedly awesome.
Here’s how Brent Lambert from FEELGuide sums up Wat Rong Khun:
All of the paintings inside the ubosot (assembly hall) have golden tones. The four walls, ceiling and floor contain paintings showing an escape from the defilement’s of temptation to reach a celestial “all seeing” state […] Undoubtedly the most bizarre element of the design is the presence of contemporary images throughout the interior. Images of the Predator from the Schwarzenegger film franchise, Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Avatar, Keanu Reeves’ character in the Matrix, rocket ships, and others line the walls.
The teachings of Buddhism can be conveyed in comic-like artwork, but I’m not sure how Bumble Bee standing on a Pod Racer from Star Wars enhances the spiritual journey.
In all seriousness, from what I hear these photos (above and below) are a very small piece of an enormous mural. There importance? Well, apparently none. They are just images that people had enjoyed when Buddhism came around, who were the monks to ask people to not to decorate on their temples.
Regardless, it looks like it’s time for me to convert
