Let the speculations end!

It has been confirmed by a press release from Warner Brothers that none other than Tom Hardy (played Eams in Inception) will be playing one of the most dangerous Bat-villain ever – Bane, and the gorgeous Anne Hathaway will be playing Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman).

Personally, I am hugely relieved by this news, as it will allow for some very interesting developments to complete Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy.

Check below the jump for the press release from Warner Brothers (via Slash Film), and descriptions of who these characters are (and speculation as to what could be their roles in the movie).

BURBANK, CA, January 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

In addition, has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

So, what do you need to know about Bane and Catwoman?

First off, Catwoman is one of Batman’s oldest villains, a sexy master thief with acrobatic skills, an assortment of whips and claws and a unique relationship with cats. What is more important to know, is that she is a off and on love interest of Batman and one of the few to know his secret identity.

What could this mean to the upcoming film? I see her being introduced when she tries to steal something from Wayne Manor, which could lead her to discovering his alter-ego. Another option is that Selina is recruited by Batman to steal something that will help him in his fight against Bane.

Bane, on the other hand, is incredibly strong, a genius strategist and master of various martial arts who is the only person to have “broken the Bat.” Bane discovered Batman‘s secret identity, but decided to wear him down slowly. He broke the walls open of Arkham Asylum, allowing numerous Bat-villains to escape and have Batman hunt them all down. Once completed, Batman returned to the Bat-cave where Bane waited, attacked and broke Batman‘s back in one of the most influential and powerful fight scenes in comic book history.

I believe that in the movie, Bane will cause serious physical damage to Batman (maybe even break his back), taking out his career as Batman. But what will happen afterward … maybe the introduction of Robin (or another Batman) taking over the crime-fighting game at the very end of the movie? Would be the perfect way to end the trilogy, won’t it, with the passing of the torch?

Just a few thoughts … what do you think?
