I have to admit something. I am a fan of ‘Judge Dredd’, the 1995 American science fiction action film starring Sylvester Stallone. Yes, I am well aware of what a thumb up the ass it is to the comic-book source material. I understand that by liking this film I am purposely putting myself in front of a nerd firing squad, but I don’t care. I squee with glee every time “I am the law! is spouted from Sly’s half paralyzed mouth. What can I say, I am a die hard Stallone fan. I want him to father my children. He could dump his DNA into Mrs. Nerd Bastards and I would nod my head in approval.
My secret shame aside, I, like the rest of you also want a truer live-action version of the Mega-City lawman. Question is: Will the upcoming reboot from IM Global starring Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings, Star Trek) fair any better?
Producer Andrew Macdonald told Empire earlier this year. “Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Mega-City, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real.”
We’ve seen a few photos from Dredd, including one that gave a pretty good idea of how Karl Urban would look wearing the helmet (Check it out after the jump)that is a core part of the uniform for the title character, but what about that bike? Well, released today is an action-shot (pictured above) that shows a Judge in full costume riding one of the high-tech Lawmaster bikes used by the Judges in Mega-City One. *Sigh* I hate to judge the costume and bike under these conditions but yeah, it’s not very flattering. I dunno, I guess if it was shot front on, low angle it would look pretty bad-ass, but right now I am not amused. On the other hand, I do kind of dig the independent, raw, dirty, gritty look they are going for. Perhaps the creatives behind this reboot will deliver on Andrew Macdonald’s promise?
What do you all think? Please share you thoughts in the comments below. For all you Sly fans out there give me a “I am the law!”
Dredd is shooting now in South Africa, with Pete Travis directing Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson and Lena Headey of The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Game of Thrones as Madeline Madrigal, aka Ma-Ma, aka the leader of a gang who runs one of the blocks in Mega-City One

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.
