It was recently rumored that I have a big penis. This is not true. Truth is it’s enormous (OK, not really. Just party sized). Earlier this month, rumor talk also suggested that D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, I am Number 4) may direct a big screen adaptation of the comic Preacher, scripted by John August (Go, Big Fish). Today Caruso confirmed via his twitter account he has officially closed his deal, and is set to direct the movie.
My deal just closed on Preacher. Going back to the dark side and pretty fucking pumped!
For those of you who don’t know about Preacher,
Preacher was created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, and tells the story of Texas reverend Jesse Custer who, after merging with the escaped offspring of a demon and an angel, find himself imbued with the word of God, the power to command anyone to do his bidding. Teamed with his ex girlfriend, Tulip O’Hare and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, Custer sets out across America to track down the almighty and force him to explain why he abandoned creation.
While we wait we on official press release, we can speculate on what all this means. A script by John August is promising and Caruso directing is OK. Not great, but OK. He’s great with directing action and capturing people’s raw emotions. However, DJ directing a film like Preacher just doesn’t seem to fit. Real question is, how the hell can they adapt a 9 volume comic series into one 2 hour plus flick? Well, according to producer Neil Moretz this will be the first in a series of Preacher films, and they want it to be rated ‘R’. Oh, that sounds nice.
Whatever the outlook, I’m just excited the movie is getting made. Preacher is one of the most violent, offensive, rude, meaningful pieces of literature. It’s got vampires, guns, babes, ass-faced men, angels and a whole bunch of awesome.
What are your thoughts in Caruso possibly taking on this film project?
