Argh! I hate this on again off again shit. Honestly, what I really hate is your Mom. But, that’s neither here or there. We recently reported that Neil Gaiman‘s comic book The Sandman was no longer getting adapted to television. Erik Kripke, who was in charge of the show, recently said that “unfortunately, for a lot of varying reasons, Sandman is not in the works, at least for this season. I retain hope that maybe sometime in the future we can resurrect it.”

Now it sounds as if Sandman hopes are still kicking in it’s sleep. Geoff Johns, writer and Chief Creative Officer for DC Comics says that development continues.

Today, Geoff Johns said via Twitter,

Correction to world: The Sandman is AWAKE! 🙂 Psyched to be working with @neilhimself on developing one of the greatest series ever!

The @neilhimself mentioned in the tweet is Neil Gaiman, so that’s a good thing. As Geoff Johns said in a follow-up tweet, “Sandman in any form – comics to live action – doesn’t work without [Neil]”

Ugh, fuck this noise. Personally, Sandman should never be adapted into anything. The series is a staple amongst comic literature. Rich with vision and complexities that could never be adapted properly. I’d hate to see it reduced to a pop-corn live action flick or TV show. More importantly I’d hate to give Hot Topic another reason to stay in business.

I suppose if a artistically resourcesful station like AMC, or STARZ got to have their way with it then it might be given some justice. Perhaps even a Hitchcock type variety hour, a “Sandman Presents” show could effectively leave the existing stories alone & expand awareness of the property. An animated series would honestly be the best route, as you could do a straight adaptation w/o the cause of bullshit creative liberties. But, it’s style and subject matter lends it’s self to one station and one demographic. The CW and fat goth girls. That’s the truth.

Eh, perhaps with Neil himself involved he’ll ensure the vision of the series will be treated properly. Possibly in new and exciting ways.
