In an interview with Newsarama at C2E2 last week, Marvel Comics Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada confirmed that Joss Whedon’s The Avengers has started filming, and promises it will be “the quintessential superhero movie.”
Just starting with the cast, it’s like a rock concert. It’s unbelievable, even in San Diego when they brought them all up on stage. You got to see all these amazing actors on stage. If you didn’t get chills up your spine, you have no pulse. Basically, get yourself a casket and go home. And then you have Joss Whedon at the wheel. I’ve seen the screenplay, it’s amazing. Ive’ seen what we’re going to do. I’ve seen designs, they’re out of this world. It’s going to be the quintessential super hero movie. I hesitate to say more but were really, really, excited about it.
The Avengers isn’t set to hit theatres until May 4 of next year, but the fact that it’s already filming is both a testament to the monstrous cast (which includes Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Chris Evans as Captain America, among a host of others) and the tremendous ambition Marvel is applying to its shared cinematic universe. We’ve already seen the developments of The Incredible Hulk and both Iron Man films, this year we’ll get Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, and just over a year from now we’ll see how it all comes together, under the brilliant gaze of Joss Whedon.
Over a year to wait…let the fanboy nail-biting begin.
