Zack Snyder was in London Wednesday for the premiere of Sucker Punch, and crushed the hopes of anyone hoping for a shared DC Comics cinematic universe when he spoke to HeyUGuys about Warner Brothers’ planned Justice League film and its relation to his upcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel.
Warner Brothers Motion Picture Group President Jeff Robinov confirmed to the LA Times earlier this week that the rumors of a developing Justice League film were true, setting the internet abuzz with speculation on how that film would relate to both Man of Steel and Christopher Nolan‘s forthcoming final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.
So, Mr. Snyder, how does your flick relate to Warner Brothers’ Justice League project?
‘It doesn’t. Like what Chris Nolan is doing and what I’m doing with Superman, what they’ll do with Justice League will be its own thing with its own Batman and own Superman. We’ll be over here with our movie and they’ll kinda get to do it twice which is kinda cool’
So, just a year after releasing what Warner Brothers and DC Comics hope to be two definitive films on their two most definitive characters, they’re going to recast both roles, get a new creative team together and start all over again? That’s…interesting.
Before we beat up on this idea, consider how comic books work in the first place. A creative team gets going, does their version, and then another creative team comes along and re-interprets. It’s why the characters have stayed fresh for decades. Let Marvel have the shared universe concept. I’m happy to sit back and watch as Warner Brothers spends its millions on a cinematic DC Comics Multiverse. One request though: can we get Bizarro to show up just once?
