Two Spider-Men, one video game. Sounds like a really geeky threesome, but it’s the newest Spider-Man game coming out this fall. With the success(?) of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions it looks like it’s time for another time traveling romp, thankfully without that awful Spider-ham. Spider-Man: Edge of Time was one of the things most talked about on the floor of WonderCon 2011 and it’s time for a first look in trailer form. When classic Peter Parker Spider-Man teams up with with Miquel O’Hara, the Spider-Man of 2099, it takes two heroes to save the same universe.

Developed by Beenox, creators of Shattered Dimension, this sequel (if you want to call it that) has the two Spider-Men racing to restore the proper course of their history.
According to Joystiq, the game mechanics of Spider-Man: Edge of Time are quite unique, as playing one character will affect gameplay to the other. A nice feature of the game is that the cast of Shattered Dimensions will return to voice their respected characters. Also, various story devices dictate when and where you switch characters, who have their own unique strengths and weaknessesto deal with. Another great feature: no matter what Spider-Man you are you’ll be able to see the progress of the other via picture-in-picture type effects at the bottom of the screen. For example, when Spider-Man 2099 finds himself in battle with a giant robot, the Spider-Man of today can cause damage to the lab in which that robot’s technology was developed, causing a ripple through the timeline that results in that enemy becoming far less dangerous to Spider-Man 2099.
It’ll be very interesting to see how all this plays out when Spider-man: Edge of Time is released this fall for all systems. Here’s hoping the repetitive pattern of introduction, initial villain fight, pursue escaping villain, fight minions, catch up with villain, pursue some more, deal with more minions, and then battle the villain, is cut and some new gameplay format is put in its place.
