So the latest craze these days is a “Body Modification” of the ear, making it pointy like an elf. I guess it’s not enough for some to just have a tattoo, piercings, and brandings, they have to have their body changed. I have seen sub-dermal horns, forehead ridges, and knuckle horns at various conventions and have never had the uncontrollable urge to go under the knife. It’s not a simple operation to preform either, it’s painful and often irreversible.
The surgery video below was performed by a “body modification artist” from Tempe, AZ. He slices the top of the cartilage and then sews it back together in a point (via GeekTyrant).
“There’s a lot of people out there who have an inner vision of themselves and they want to express that to the world around them. I’m very happy to be an artist that can provide that kind of work.”
Dr. Arthur W. Perry had this to say:
“The real risks are one – major deformity of the ear, which is very easy to have happen and two, infection of the ear, and if infection occurs, it can destroy the ear within days. It’s very difficult and often it’s not possible to fully reconstruct a nice-looking ear.”
Many of the articles floating around the Internet claim that music is heard better with the modification, I call bullpucky. A good set of headphones would solve that issue. This is just people that want pointy ears and won’t be satisfied with plastic Cosplay ears. If they want to do it, I’m cool with it, just go see a REAL DOCTOR, not some hack in the back of a dirty tattoo parlor.
Just like I tell my friends that want tattoos, go to the best! Go to someone who knows what the hell they are doing. If the shop is dirty, walk out. If the shop is cluttered, walk out. If you’ve not seen a tattoo done by the tattoo artist in person and like it, WALK OUT!
Last but not least, if your drunk, walk out. If still want it sober, go for it.
