A short synopsis that could very well be the plot of Zack Snyder‘s Superman: Man of Steel has been leaked online by Baseline Studio System. For the time being consider this only rumor, but here’s what they’ve posted,
A young reporter named Clark Kent roams the world covering various news stories. When he is compelled to use his secret powers to intervene in a crisis in West Africa, he returns to Smallville to learn more about his origins and the hero he was born to be.
If you know your Superman you will notice this is basically the plot of Superman: Birthright (pictured above), which was long rumored to be an influence on this upcoming film. Meaning this might just be an old rumor somehow finding it’s way back in the headlines. It’s unusual a plot summary would be released now while Snyder isn’t allowing actors copies of the script and is forcing them to read it in a private, locked room. But then again who knows, maybe they simply like to tease and torture us and make us crazy with leaked possibilities. What dicks.
Bleeding Cool is confidant in the source though, writing,
It looks to me like Warner Bros. registered some details of the film, most likely with casting services who fed it to Baseline, somehow, but have since decided to play coy. I’d be prepared to make a reasonable sized bet on the above being the film’s story.
I don’t think it’s locked, I just like the odds. A lot.
I hope this does become the basic outline for the movie. While I’m not super familiar with Birthright it sounds to me like an excellent plot for an origin story that doesn’t want to bore us with the same origin story. We’ve already seen a young Kal-El found and raised by the Kent’s in Smallville, move to Metropolis, become a reporter for The Daily Planet, fall in love with Lois Lane and seek his true destiny as Superman. Snooze. And while Birthright may still include much of what we’ll recognize as Superman’s origin, I like the idea of starting with him already a man grown coming to terms with his calling.
Think this is the likely plot for Superman: Man of Steel? Or are we going to see an incomprehensible Zack Snyder vision of Smallville?
