Ah yes, another 4/20 is upon us. What better activity for you to participate in while blazed out of your mind than watching a movie? Well, if your stumped about what flick to pick I’ve got you covered with some highly recommended titles. This Top 10 is split in to two catagories; movies to watch while getting high and movies to watch once high. I think you can easily see how one slips in to the other. First, flicks for the perfect smoke-a-long,
This often over-looked 2006 comedy from Happy Madison productions follows Alex, video game tester and avid, avid pot smoker who is evicted and forced to move in with his grandmother. Having to hide his smoking and his stash leads to hilarity, like his grandmother mistaking the weed for tea and brewing one hell of a pot of, well, pot. At the same time he’s very close to completing programming his first video game until co-worker and “genius programmer”, J.P steals it. Alex seeks out his dealer, Dante, for solace and his met with an one, enormous spliff (as well as an African tribesman, a Chinese martial artists and a monkey. Dante is one of the most outrageous pot dealers put to film). Eventually J.P. is proven a thief and Alex goes on to be the creator of a hugely successful video game. In this movie, the nerd smokes the high score.

I figure if I study high and take the test high, I’ll get high scores, right?
This 2001 comedy stars Method Man and Redman as two stoners with a strain of weed that when smoked, makes them smarter. A nerd’s dream. When they pass the GED with flying colors and as high as kites they decide to put their smart smoking to the test. They enroll in Harvard and turn the preppy, uptight university on it’s head. Also featuring a killer soundtrack with tracks like, “Hits from the Bong” and a musical appearance by Cisco Kid of Cypress Hill.
Dazed and Confused
Cited more than any other stoner-comedy (except Cheech & Chong), Dazed and Confused brought us back to a time when high school was all that existed it, and escaping it was all that mattered. Every nerd knows the trials and tribulations of high school only too well, and we get to experience them anew with Sabrina and Mitch, two freshman trying to skip out on the ritualistic hazing from upperclassmen. Dazed and Confused is most notable for following different cliques of the high school scene and the grass that binds them. It all ends with a massive party entailing much stoned, drunken debauchery. After watching you’ll feel compelled to smoke a joint on your high school’s football field’s 50-yard line. For nostalgia.
Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle
Stoner flicks and road comedies go hand in hand and, Harold and Kumar Got To White Castle is one of the best. Harold and Kumar are not your typical movies stoners. First off their Asian and Indian, plus super-brainy guys. Harold is a financial analyst and Kumar is a future doctor. This movie completely does away with the stoner-stereotype of the slacker image. After an evening of massive bong rips they’re hit with the craving that only tiny, steamed burgers can quench. What ensues is one of the most off-the-wall, zany, and simply freakin’ crazy adventures. They ride a cheetah, break out of jail, almost get into a foursome with super hot Malin Akerman and her grotesque husband, and Neil Patrick Harris steals their car. Seriously one wild and crazy night, that is until they had to Escape from Guantanamo Bay.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
If we’re talking nerdy stoner flicks this one takes the cake. Obviously it has weed smoking and crude jokes a plenty but where this movies stands out is in it’s cameos. It follows Jay and Silent Bob on their way to Hollywood where production on a film based on the comic, Bluntman and Chronic is begining. The comic book is inspired by them and afraid it would ruin their good names, and after getting in an internet comments battle of words (who hasn’t been there before?) they decide to shut it down. The whole movie is filled with nerdy references from Scooby-Doo to Star Wars. Jay and Silent Bob completely bake our a suspiciously “Mystery Machine” like van to the point where even the dog is talking, and this film boast not one but two cameos from Star Wars alums, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. Notably the final scenes entail Jay dressed as Chronic battling Hamill as the Cocknocker. Fittingly they both have bong-shaped light sabers. May the Bongs be with You.
Okay, so now you’re good and high. Your eyes are all squinty and red. You’re ready to watch something awesome while you’re ridiculously stoned.
You’ll be needing a fat blunt to make it through the stiff acting but the awesome 80s special effects will be well worth it. Tron was the beginning of computer animation and still today looks futuristic and far out. Enter the grid with the Dude, sorry, Jeff Bridges, and be transported to a world of lightcycles, killer disc battles and skin-tight circuit suits in this campy film. For a double feature team this up with the sequel, Tron: Legacy.
Want another trip into the computer? Too late, you’re already in one. At least that’s what you’ll be believing after you’ve been completely sucked in by The Matrix. The first and best of what was a disappointing trilogy, The Matrix lifted the bar with their special effects. In this world humans are really living in pods being used as batteries for the machines, but humans think they’re existing in a normal, everyday world simulated for them by the matrix. Once you acquire knowledge of this truth you can manipulate the matrix as it you like, meaning this movie is filled with mind-boggling, trippy action sequences.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
You want trippy, trippy is what you’ll get with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Loaded with more drugs than I’m sure some of you have heard of this literal adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s classic 1972 novel is weird. Like, super weird. So weird it’s really hard to sum it up. But believe me when you’ve got this much stuff, “two bags of weed, seventy five pellets of mescaline, some high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-filled wtih cocaine, a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers — also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of ether, two dozen amyls…” you’re in for one hell of a trip.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Just take one look at those hobbits and you know they’ve been smoking. In this luscious, epic fantasy adaptaion of J.R.R. Tolkein’s classic you’re treated to amazing landscapes and even more amazing battles. Everything about this film is beautiful, from the wonderfully crafted characters to the equally well-crafted wonders of Middle Earth. And back to those hobbits, Merry and Pippin are resident stoners of the Shire. While we’re never positive it’s the wacky weed their smoking there sure do get awfully hungry afterwards. Plus, who can watch Gandalf blow out a ship made of smoke after a hit from pipe and not wish he’d pass it your way?
The Original Star Wars trilogy
While nothing stoner-ific occurs in these films you’ll be transported to a galaxy far, far away once you light up. Lightsaber battles look like famed lazer, light shows of the 70s, Yoda’s wisdom is like sound advice from a venerated pot head and what is Jabba smokin’ outta that hookah? In fact, Return of the Jedi features the most stoner friendly creatures, the Ewoks. What? You thought Ewoks were lame? Well, these pipe-smoking, drum circle banging, tree-living hippies help crush and empire, dude. Yub nub.
These are my picks for the Top 10 Nerdy Stoner Flicks. I know I’ve left out a bunch, most notably anything from Cheech & Chong, but they receive honorable mentions and are well above any silly Top 10 list. What are some of your favorite stoner flicks? Have a favorite nerdy film you like to watch when you’re ripped as fuck? Please share, if you can tear yourself away from your bong long enough to type.
