The first two episodes of Kevin Tancharoen’s online web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy -spawned from the 2010 viral video– followed the story of Sonja Blade (Jeri Ryan), Stryker (Tahmoh Penikett) and Jax (Michael Jai White) while they tried to stop an evil crime ring run by Kano (Darren Shahlavi). It wasn’t the greatest kick-off for the anticipated web series. First half felt like a procedural cop drama with bad acting, dialog and action. It wasn’t till the second half did it really feel like MK.
Anyway, the latest installment has hit the Internet with the story of Johnny Cage.
After unsuccessfully trying to sell his reality television pilot pitch to a studio exec, Johnny Cage, an American action-hero movie star who has fallen on hard times, is recruited by Shang Tsung, a powerful sorcerer who has the power to suck souls from people, to fight in the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament.
I like what their doing with these back story videos, the characterization is much more entertaining than just another Mortal Kombat fight scene done over and over. The weekly videos lends a nice television series “have to wait” feeling. Wouldn’t you love to see these as a serial in the theaters like the old Buck Rodgers or Rocketmen? The production value is excellent, the acting above board, and the story lines interesting. It’s about all I could ask for from a web series. Thumb Ups for Ed Boon Cameo by way.
