Whether you love it or hate it, Warner Bros. is still trudging on with its Americanized production of the classic manga Akira. It’s been reported the actors considered for the role of Testuo and Kaneda, the futuristic teen bikers, include: Zac Efron, James Franco, Robert Pattinson, Chris Pine, and Justin Timberlake.
Yet, according to the The Hollywood Reporter, the frontrunner for the part of Kaneda is…Keanu Reeves. SAY WHAT?!? Ok, before all you big fans of Akira go in a corner to contemplate this news angrily, just know that Keanu does not have a definite offer. They just state, that talks with “his reps” have gone well.
Keanu seems a rather fitting choice compared to the above listed actors. Despite the fact that Keanu is definitely older than others rumored for the part he does have the Asian look that people all over the internet and onwards have been complaining would be lacking in this Americanization. Plus, he has shown the ability to create an edgy and lively character with his roles in: Johnny Mnemonic, Point Break, and The Matrix Trilogy.
Don’t get me wrong, young actors such as: Zac Efron, Robert Pattinson, and the like would bring high box office ticket sales. But, the end result of the movies cultural feel would be compromised. I mean it’s already been changed from “New Tokyo” to “New Manhattan”, and there may be even more changes to come before this cast list is set. But, let’s not forget that all these “maybe’s” and “could be’s” are only possibilities and not confirmed or decided on. With that in mind, could you see Keanu Reeves annihilate Akira or make it a hit like The Matrix?
