Kevin Tancharoen‘s Mortal Kombat based web series has now reached it’s halfway point with episode 5 (10 episode series). This latest Ep. is the second half to a two part story arc for Kitana and Mileena – two rival daughters and deadly assassins of Outworld emperor Shao Kahn.

The first half depicted Kahns take over of the realm of Edinia. Basically he crushed his enemies. Saw them driven before him and heard the lamentation of da women. Along the way he took the queen Sidel’s baby daughter, cloned her (“and…..twins”) and raised them both with devious and deadly intentions.

The second half focuses on Kitana and Mileena’s teenage years. Mileena with her raging mutant blood and shifty mouth grows a resentment towards Kitana, Shao Kahn uses them to destroy all who threaten his rule. But when they come upon King Jerrod on one of their missions, they finally learn the truth about their Mother and Father, and Kitana looks to plot her revenge against Shao Kahn.

It feels almost wrong calling this week’s episode of Mortal Kombat Legacy an installment in the “Live Action Mortal Kombat Web Series”, as most of it is animated. On the other hand, using animation (similar to O’Ren Ishi story from Kill Bill Vol. 1) allows Tancharoen to develop characterization in ways his budget would never allow.  Overall, this two part episode  did what it needed to… told the back story of Kitana and Mileena. It was really well thought out and done fairly well. Tancharoen is handling the MK lore respectably.

Now, this series is neat and I appreciate the effort put into it, but it’s way too short to have to wait a week for a new episode. It also doesn’t help that an entire minute is wasted in explaining what happened in the previous episode because I could watch previous eps. if I wanted to know that. Regardless of all that, one thing that I’m rather disappointed with is how Tancharoen has shifted away from the nitty-gritty, real-world approach from his Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short -the trailer that launched the current web series. Rebirth was was unique, creative  and far more interesting than these literal live-action depictions of back stories that have been revealed in the games and movies. Where’s the Baraka with surgical knife implants? Where’s Reptile being a human with natural lizard like deformities?

How the fuck did this pitch turn into MK:Legacy? I’m kind of pissed.
