Stanley Tucci Cast in ‘The Hunger Games’

The Hunger Games is the story of 12 “districts” forced by the leading district every year to hold a lottery and send two children to “The Hunger Games.” The games, in which each contestant, known as “Tributes,” attempt to stay alive while killing each other in a mandatory televised event. Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada, Captain America, and Lucky Number Slevin to name a few) will get his chance to bring his best Regis Philbin impression as he’s been cast to play Caesar Flickerman in The Hunger Games. Flickerman is the wildly popular, charismatic television interviewer who hosts the Hunger Games and speaks to the child Tributes on national television before they attempt to kill one another. He’s famous for radically changing his appearance for every Hunger Game, always seeking to look younger than his age.

Lionsgate announced the casting via their new Twitter, @Lionsgatenews. Here’s the press release:

Lionsgate and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES are pleased to announce that Stanley Tucci (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE LOVELY BONES) has been cast in the role of Caesar Flickerman in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel.

Caesar Flickerman is utterly familiar to all the citizens of Panem as the l host of the Hunger Games. Known for his outrageous appearance and buoyant personality, his upbeat interviews of the 24 tributes – a boy and a girl from each of the country’s 12 districts – are presented on every television in the nation.  He is famous for turning any conversation around to the positive and finding humor in even the most dire circumstances.

Vulture reported a few weeks ago that Tucci was up for a role and it was speculated that he could play Cinna, Katniss’s designer and one of the other great characters in the series. Flickerman isn’t as important as Cinna, but he’s very showy and will show up in the sequel, if it gets made. There’s rumors that John C. Reilly and Woody Harrelson could also be offered roles in the upcoming movie.

I am a big fan of Tucci and think he will do well in the Tribute interview scenes. How do you think he’ll fair as Caesar in The Hunger Games?

*Note we’ve been a little behind on Hunger Games coverage. There’s been a bunch of casting news, mostly in regards to the 12 districts. All of which we’ve missed, but from here on out will be on Hunger Games news like stink on a monkey.
