Principle photography for Christopher Nolan‘s Batman threequel , The Dark Knight Rises, officially kicked off on Wednesday. You’d think the entire cast would be locked and loaded by now. Nope. With production under way, three more names have just joined the congested cast. According to Variety actor Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket) and Tom Conti, (yea.. I dunno who the fuck he is either) have both joined the film. In addition, Joey King, an 11-year-old actress who starred in Ramona and Beezus as well as Battle: Los Angeles, has been cast. At this time, their respective roles have not been announced.

I don’t want to play the speculation game on who this trio will be playing, because it’s pointless. Instead, lets talk about how potentially over crowded this cast is. Let me run down the list of names and you tell me if it’s bursting at the seems:

*clears throat* Christian Bale as Batman/BruceWayne,Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake, Michael Caine as Alfred, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, Morgan Freeman as Lucious Fox, Nester Campbell as Mayor of Gotham, Josh Pence as a young Ra’s al Ghul, Alon Aboutboul as un-named Mad Scientist, and Juno Temple in an unannounced role.

With the addition of Matthew Modine, Tom Conti and Joey King, that’s 15 characters appearing in The Dark Knight Rises. That’s a lot of fucking people. Does that concern you? It’s perfectly understandable to think that Nolan might have too much on his plate. The bigger the cast, the less time Nolan has to devote to character development, which in turn could hurt the overall narrative. Now, with that said, ‘The Dark Knight’ had the exact same number (thanks imdb). That was a pretty well balanced film. Suffice to say, it looks like a lot on paper, but considering how well everyone was positioned in the last film, I think having another large cast is a minimal concern.

After all, “In Nolan We Trust”.
