Bah! There’s officially too many goddamn people in The Dark Knight Rises. The other day we reported that Matthew Modine, Tom Conti and Joey King were joining cast (their roles were undisclosed). There additions brought the grand cast total to 15. Fans were responding with a collective ‘Whoa. Fuck. Shit, that’s a lot of people’, but we defended it. After all, it’s pretty equivalent to the previous bat flick and that was a pretty well balanced film. But now, we’ve officially reached the fucking ceiling. There are 2 more folks coming into the fray. The now-shooting Dark Knight Rises has just added Brett Cullen (LOST, Ghost Rider) and Chris Ellis (Catch Me If You Can, Transformers). Reportedly, they will play judge (Cullen) and a priest (Ellis).
So if my math is right (and it almost never is) that’s 17 characters that will appear in the 2+ hour threequel. I dunno about you but I am honestly on the verge of questioning the all mighty Nolan (dun, dun, dunnnnn). Since we all follow the “In Nolan We Trust” mantra, lets try think about this logically.
Modine, Conti, King, Cullen and Ellis are pretty prominent actors, yes? Does their notoriety automatically indicate that their roles in the film must be significant?Well, it’s the conclusion we jump too anyway. Big names must mean big parts, right? I don’t think that’s the case here. Being cast this late in the game almost certainly means their roles are minor. These are fine actors playing two-bit roles. Side characters that further along the narratives of the major players. A step above goon #3 and cop #5 but right below Nestor Carbonell and Morgan Freeman. Something like that.
So, I think we all need to calm the fuck down and take these casting announcements in stride. Yes, there is a lot of people, but I’m confident it will all work together smoothly.
For the record here’s a list of who’s who:
Christian Bale as Batman/BruceWayne,Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake, Michael Caine as Alfred, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, Morgan Freeman as Lucious Fox, Nester Campbell as Mayor of Gotham, Josh Pence as a young Ra’s al Ghul, Alon Aboutboul as un-named Mad Scientist. Juno Temple, Matthew Modine, Tom Conti and Joey King‘s roles remain unannounced.
