Green Lantern, that dismal example of an over-hyped, over-CGI’ed, and under-written movie flop is getting the go ahead for a second movie. The idea being that a grittier, darker version is just the change needed to make this movie franchise sing. So trying to be the DC Comics version of the popular Marvel Iron Man didn’t work out, so let’s try copying something of on our side (DC Comics) that did.
Warner Bros. Film Group President Jeff Robinov told the LA Times:
We had a decent opening so we learned there is an audience. To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action… And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth.
OK, the film did make 50 million plus in it’s opening week and there is an audience out there for this franchise. The film makers just couldn’t pull in the non comic book fan. Maybe they should have picked a better set of villains or written the movie to be enjoyed by someone over the age of eight.
The one redeeming factor this whole story has is the storyline of Sinestro’s rebellion agianst the Lantern Corp and his turn to “the dark side.” That might just be the gritty, darker story line this franchise needs to put butts in the seats.
