No, Whedon Won’t Kill Agent Coulson. Probably.

Yesterday, the news around the interweb was that Clark Gregg‘s character from The Avengers, Agent Phil Coulson, was going to meet his demise in the upcoming comic book adaptation. Was the rumour believable? Sure. Remember that Joss Whedon is directing the film, so it’s very likely a possibility because, well, he just likes to kill characters people love. (See: Buffy’s Mom, Tara, Anya, Spike, Fred, Wesley, Wash and Shepherd Book.)

Well Gregg posted to his Twitter this morning saying, “U know I can’t talk about Fight Club. Let’s just say I’m very excited about IM3.” IM3 of course stands for Iron Man 3, which is due in 2013.

Coulson is a pretty important figure in the Avengers movie mythos having been in Iron Mans 1 and 2, as well as Thor, so he would be a natural choice to kill off: important to the story, but he’s expendible unlike, say, Captain America or The Hulk. Gregg’s probably already been told about future plans for his character, and it’s unlikely that he’d be allowed to talk about appearing in Iron Man 3 if he’s going to buy the farm in The Avengers, but we’ll see. And if Coulson doesn’t die, who will? Whedon got to kill somebody!

And in other Avengers… Wait.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!

In other Avengers news, it seems that IMDb may have tipped a major plot point in the film concerning Colbie Smulders‘ character Maria Hill. Check out the screen cap below and see if you’ve notice the change. (and if you don’t want to be spoiled hit the ‘Back’ button in your browser).

Did you catch it? Not only is Smulders playing Nick Fury’s deputy, Hill, she’s playing Anelle as well. Who’s Anelle? Why she’s queen of The Skrulls, a shape-shifting alien race that recently tried to infiltrate the Marvel Universe and take it over in Secret Invasion. Is Whedon setting up a sequel? Time will tell.
