Looks like there could be two serial killers on television very soon, but this one doesn’t make trophies…he makes his next meal.
Already in development is “Hannibal,” a one-hour drama written by Bryan Fuller centering on Lecter’s early days, namely his time going head-to-head with FBI agent Will Graham. Martha De Laurentiis (Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon) has signed on to produce the show. Given her previous experience with Hannibal, it will be like just riding a bike.. The series will be handled by newly created Gaumont International Television (GIT) based out of Los Angeles, GIT is led by Katie O’Connell as CEO and Richard Frankie as COO.
“As we looked to expand our global presence in television it became clear that the next logical step was to launch Gaumont International Television. As a leading independent studio we are looking to build a company that is nimble, global and creative in this ever changing television landscape,” commented French studio Gaumont’s CEO, Sidonie Dumas, and vice CEO, Christophe Riandee. “With Katie and Richard’s background in the US television market, both from a creative and business perspective, and with Erik in London overseeing our distribution and co-production, and our French team, we feel we are well positioned to produce and offer top-quality entertainment that will succeed globally.”
The back story between Hannibal and Agent Graham has been alluded to in Thomas Harris‘ novel Red Dragon and the films Manhunter and Red Dragon. Having another killer in a dramatic series will be different, for one Lecter isn’t killing in the name of justice. His character is that of of a maniacl killer with cunning and wit against his opponents. Wait a minute….this sounds like Dexter all over again.
