Every time I hear news on the upcoming Robocop reboot I cup my hand to my mouth and make an obnoxious farting noise. I just cant picture a Robocop reboot turning out good, especially when the original was done so perfectly (poignant satirization of corporate corruption, uber graphic violence…etc). It just can’t be duplicated. However, today’s news did make me cock my head (like a cute puppy) with intrigue.
Appearing on Brazillian TV channel Globo 1 to discuss his film Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within, José Padilha also talked a little about his Robocop plans.
The script that he and Josh Zetumer have been working on is nearing completion and stated they’re having a meeting with MGM this next week. He also confirmed that the film would be set in Detroit, as in Paul Verhoeven’s original. More importantly, he mentioned who he’s gunning for to portray the cybernetic cop. Padilha feels that X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender would be the best choice to take on the lead.
Here’s the translated excerpt from the interview:
I’ll film Robocop. I’m indeed writing the script, the writer is here with me in Rio, we’ve spent over the last 15 days working together, refining the script.
I’ll be travelling this friday back to LA, bringing this new version to discuss with the studio, and maybe begin with the casting, selecting actors… and the idea is to begin filming in February – February or March. That’s the idea, y’know, we never know in the American movie industry. We’re just delivering the project, but also we depend on the schedule of the actors… it’s tough.
I can’t talk yet, it’s too early to speak, but there are some actors I like. I really like the Fassbender, I’d like to talk to him — I’ll talk to him. There’s a possibility… and there’s a lot of other great actors that would play Robocop. But that’s the idea, to film around January, February, March.
Whoa! Michael Fassbender charmed the shit out of us with his portrayal as Magneto in First Class. He’s been consistently good in all his recent flicks too (The Dangerous Method, Shame). A brilliant actor who’s got the “IT” factor, whatever “IT” is. Fassbender would indeed be the best actor to play Robocop.
Fassbender is the third in a trio of actors on the directors wish list. Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Michael C. Hall (Dexter) were/are potentials.
I don’t dig the idea of a reboot. I don’t like the director. I especially don’t like his plans to forgo the social/political undercurrent of the original in favor of exploring the pathos of “man becoming machine”. However, I agree with his actor wishlist. Nobody can top Peter Weller’s (the original Robocop) performance, but Fassbender and Hall could certainly come close.
