Joss Whedon and Warren Ellis have been planning this huge web series for ages, now.  The Avengers came into the picture and knocked this project off to the side for a while, but we now have reassurance that the Wastelanders is still going to happen.  And happen it will.

This thing is going to be the next biggest Internet phenomenon, primarily because both of these guys already have their own fan bases.  Also, because Joss will be financing the web series himself, there will be complete creative freedom to do exactly what they want to do with it.

It’ll be quite different from Dr. Horrible, but I’m sure it’ll be just as — or even more — awesome.  Joss mentioned that Wastelanders will be a dark piece, but what works of his don’t have some sort of dark element to them?  His mastery of that shit is what makes him so popular.

From Entertainment Weekly:

”I’m just like, ‘Gosh, well, if I’m going to finance this and put it together, it’s kind of dangerous.’ It’s not going to have a soundtrack album, it’s not going to have all these revenue streams,” Whedon said. “It’s going to be something that I put out there because I feel like I have to, and I don’t have to rely on anybody else to let me.”

”I really want to make something tiny. You know, get back on the Internet,” he told them, saying that web series were the “punk rock of filmmaking.” Whedon promised Wastelanders would be very different from his previous web series hit Dr. Horrible. ”I’ll say this about it…there ain’t no singing,” he said. ”It’s a dark piece.”

It’ll probably be a while before both Joss and Warren are able to direct their attention toward this project, especially since The Avengers is the priority for now. But I can’t wait for this to happen.
