Shane Black, the dude that is directing Iron Man 3, has a plan. A plan to bring back excitement and adventure to the silver screen. To do it, he wants to enlist the pulp hero that inspired the superhero, Doc Savage. Recently CBR sat down with Black and he laid out what he would do with ‘the man of bronze’
“If we do ‘Doc Savage,’ the challenge is make it adult. I think that there are so few practitioners of action movies these days who are doing worthwhile stuff that it behooves me to try to weigh in and try to do the ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark’-type stuff, to try to recapture the magic. When I stood in line for a summer movie when I was coming up at eighteen, nineteen, twenty years old, I stood in line for two and a half, three hours and you got the goods! They delivered! And if they didn’t, you went outside and said, ‘Arg, Indiana Jones 2 wasn’t that good, I stood in line for three hours!’ Now, you don’t know what you’re getting!
There’s just, I think, a decrease in the quality of these types of comic book action movies, and so it’s almost irresistible, sometimes, to try and shore that up a little, or weigh in at least with my opinion about what’s wrong and how it should be…I do want to do ‘Doc Savage.’ The script is still evolving and I’m kind of busy, but I want to get it right and I want to do it.”
Interesting, but can he actually do it? It’s pretty damn easy to stand up say Hollywood turns out craptastic adaptations these days. Yes, I will fully agree, Raiders is one of the greatest movies ever, still holds up amazingly. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was essentially borne from the same minds and it was so incredibly bad I had to kill a drifter to just feel normal again… I probably shouldn’t have wrote that on the internet.
I’d say let him try and hope he does. If you don’t know who Doc Savage is, he is the original self made bad ass. Scientist, explorer, adventurer, inventor, physician and researcher. Doc is also a master of disguise and an excellent imitator of voices. I bet he smells real nice and always calls his mom on her birthday.
