Okay. Sigh. I’m going to do my best to just report this because I have so much built up rage about the blatant white-washing occurring with this production I can’t even politely talk about it without flippin’ the fuck out. It’s a whole other issue with much rage and cussing about why Hollywood even needs to adapt Akira in the first place. But, anyway, here’s the latest in a huge list of fuck ups.
Rumors are flying, and apparently they’re pretty sound rumors at that, of Garret Hedlund being offered the role of Kaneda in Warner Bros. remake. It seems Hedlund is director Jaume Collet-Serra‘s choice and the big WB agrees, now a formal offer for the part has been sent.
Hedlund’s biggest role up until now has been as Sam Flynn in Tron: Legacy; a film, admittedly with problems but still enjoyable. Sadly, I don’t think Hedlund was an enjoyable part of Legacy, he didn’t suck, he was just bland. He didn’t spark in cyberspace like the Dude…sorry, Jeff Bridges did. Hearing he is the actor being sought for Kaneda isn’t very comforting.
Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham-Carter have also been offered roles in the film, clearly indicating they are seeking big names to flush out the cast. Also, white actors. Not an Asian in sight. Sigh.
What are you guys thinking about this Akira remake?
