First and foremost, we’re handling this as rumor. No official announcement has been made. Secondly, what in the hell are they doing?! It’s as if the vocal outrage over the casting of Garret Hedlund as Kaneda wasn’t enough. They must be determined to break the internet, and I think this announcement might do just that. Kristin Stewart has been offered the role of Kei in Jaume Collet-Sera‘s Akira.
For those unfamaliar with Katsuhiro Otomo’s classic manga which was adapted into the ground-breaking anime film, Kei is a member of an anti-government terrorist group and a psychic medium who becomes the love interest of Kaneda. The production is clearly looking for hot, young stars and after her stint in the Twilight films there’s no bigger female star for American youth than Stewart. Which is completely depressing when you really think about it.
And honestly, I don’t have that big of a beef with Stewart. I thought she was fantastic in Adventureland and I’m really looking forward to Snow White and the Huntsman. But, again, the rampant white-washing with this project is sickening. My suggestion, were there really no hot Asian chicks you could cast? It’s totally shallow and tasteless, but when has that stopped you before, Hollywood.
