Marvel Studios has officially set Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor as the director of Thor 2 replacing the previously hired director Patty Jenkins. Taylor may not be a household name, but he’s got some serious TV cred. He has worked on Mad Men, Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire.

While Taylor has a solid resume, I can’t help but feel that Marvel picked someone they can control. If they didn’t want someone to work like a puppet Kenneth Branagh wouldn’t have opted out of returning, nor would have Patty Jenkins been fired over creative differences. Marvel clearly doesn’t want anyone exercising their creativity or artistic impression. Regardless, in the end, it’s all going to be about the script. Speaking of which…

Marvel Studios is also still looking for a new screenwriter to rework the script that was initially written by Don Payne. Nothing has been mentioned about whether or not a new person has been picked, but the nominees are:  John Collee (Happy Feet), Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan), Sheldon Turner (co-wrote X-Men: First Class), and Robert Avary (Pulp Fiction).

Thor 2 is still looking at a release date of July 26, 2013.  Mark your calendars!

… Or not.
