More and more MMOs, or massive multiplayer online games for the uninitiated, are switching from required monthly subscriptions to free-to-play models and I must say, it’s awesome. Cryptic Studio’s Star Trek Online, which initially released two years ago on February 2, 2010, will be switching to free-to-play on January 17th this year.
Like so many other MMOs who have embraced the free-to-play model, Star Trek Online will offer two types of membership, Silver and Gold. Silver membership is the free one, where you’ll have full access to the game, but be limited in community or support features. The Gold membership will cost you $15 a month but allow you perks like, “in-game chat as well as extra character slots and inventory space, veteran rewards, and priority login on the game’s servers.”
Check out the game’s launch trailer below.
Also, like almost every other MMO out there, Star Trek Online is for PC only. Meaning I won’t have a chance to play until I can get a computer with the guts required for gaming. But knowing this game, as well Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Battlestar Galatica Online and hopefully the Game of Thrones browser-based MMO once it’s released, are also free-to-play gives me the drive to get my desktop PC up to snuff.
There is no better time to start tipping your toe in the MMO water. Who’s going to give Star Trek Online a try?
BECOME PART OF STAR TREK®
In Star Trek Online, the Star Trek universe appears for the first time on a truly massive scale.
In this massively multiplayer online game from Cryptic Studios, players can pioneer their own destiny as Captain of a Federation starship. Or, they can become a Klingon Warlord and expand the Empire to the far reaches of the galaxy.
Players will have the opportunity to visit iconic locations from the popular Star Trek fiction, reach out to unexplored star systems, and make contact with new alien species. With Episode Missions, every moment spent playing Star Trek Online will feel like a new Star Trek episode in which you are the star.
Immerse yourself in the future of the Trek universe as it moves into the 25th century: a time of shifting alliances and new discoveries.
ADVENTURE IN THE FINAL FRONTIER
Explore strange new worlds and seek out new life and new civilizations in a vast, expanding universe.
Establish contact with new races, discover resources and uncover mysteries that will influence Star Trek’s future.
YOU ARE THE CAPTAIN
Missions take you and your friends into the depths of space, across exotic planets and even inside starships! As the Captain of your very own ship, it’s up to you to lead your crew on missions that span a number of locations. You call the shots, no matter where you are.
When you’re in space, you direct the action – be it in the middle of a high-tension battle, where you can maneuver in 3-D space and fire a vast array of weaponry at your enemies, or as you enter warp to explore parts of the galaxy never before documented.
On the ground, you lead your away team across exciting terrain, interacting with allies and battling enemies. Every Captain commands four subordinates on the ground, all of which can be directed to act in any manner you choose. Can you lead them safely through dangerous locales?
DUTY OFFICER SYSTEM
Since the birth of the Federation and Klingon Defense Force, there have been countless unsung heroes that work in a vessel’s lower decks. No matter which department they are in, these officers have pledged their lives to their ship and fellow crewmates. For the first time ever, as their Captain, you will actively manage their activities as you delegate their assignments aboard and away from your ship. Along your journey, you can collect and trade these officers with fellow Captains to help you build the crew of your dreams.
While participating in this new form of gameplay is optional, doing so will earn you special rewards, accolades, and even help you to advance your various ranks. As with any assignment, there are inherent risks, but the potential reward may outweigh the danger. Assign your officers wisely and don’t forget to check in with your First Officer for suggestions.
Using Cryptic’s Total Customization technology, every ship you command can be customized by you, from its color to its construction.
Your ship will retain a Star Trek “feel,” but it will also represent your style. What’s more, anyone can create their own species in Star Trek Online, meaning you can tell your own story about how you came to be in the galaxy. Leave your mark on the Star Trek universe!

Star Trek Online is developed by Cryptic Studios, creators of the massively successful City of Heroes and City of Villains.
