Only yesterday we were reporting on rumors John Hawkes (Deadwood, Eastbound & Down) was being sought for the role of the Governor in the next season of The Walking Dead. Not so says Hawkes’ publicist when The Wrap spoke with them, clearly stating, “John is NOT appearing on The Walking Dead.” All right, well that’s the end of that rumor. On to more pressing matters, like why the hell haven’t they cast Tom Savini yet!?
He’s been very public about wanting the role for some time now, telling Dread Central,
Listen, I have been campaigning to be the Governor on that damn thing with Greg Nicotero for over a year. Every time I see the graphic novel and I see a picture of the Governor, who looks just like me, I send Greg a picture. I just won’t give up. Last time I talked to him about it, when I was in Los Angeles, he said they were going after a name for that part. I said, “Who?” He said John Hawkes. Well, I never heard of John Hawkes. But then he reminds me that we were in From Dusk Till Dawn together. He is the guy at the beginning in the store that fires on them. Apparently he was up for an Academy Award; he was up for something called Winter’s Bone. That’s whom they are going after for the Governor.
Well they’re not anymore, Tom, so I think it’s about time to send another photo to Greg Nicotero. Maybe even a reel of you doing some scenes.
Honestly, I can’t think of better casting for the Governor. Savini’s no stranger to zombies and I would love to see him take a big bite out of such a crazy role. If you haven’t read the comic you will love to hate the Governor. He’s the best villain the survivors have faced yet and whoever they cast in the role has to be memorable.
What do you think? Wouldn’t Savini just be the PERFECT Governor?
