I, for one, have never felt a great desire for a Blade Runner sequel. The original is one of those landmark films that deserves to stand on it’s own; a prequel or sequel would sully it’s cultural significance. Alas, a NEW Blade Runner production was announced last year and Ridely Scott signed on to direct it. As of yet, there’s no word on whether this will be a prequel, sequel, or reboot. However, rumor has it that Harrison Ford is in talks to reprise his role as Deckard. The news comes from movie blog Twitch Film. However, the site offers no quote or linkable source to indicate it’s legitimacy.
Now, producer Andrew Kosove had made abundantly clear in an August, via interview with the LA Times, that Ford returning was never a possibility. He had said the following :
In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott but if you’re asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting
The interwebs are claiming Kosove’s statement is a smokescreen. I, for one, find a producer making up a ruse like that to be incredibly unlikely.
While I agree it would be pretty nifty to see Ford reprise 1 of his 3 greatest roles, I think the greatest compliment you can pay to Blade Runner is leaving it the hell alone.
