To call the topic of abortion one of America’s most divisive issues is an understatement. It’s hard to even utter the word without someone getting heated and storming off. The fact that we’re even reporting on Buffy Summers considering an abortion in an upcoming issue of Dark Horse‘s comic Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 is proof this is a hot button issue.
So why is Buffy thinking abortion? Well for starters, she’s preggers. That was a big shock for the slayer a few issues back. And now she’s coming to terms with the thought of bringing a child into a world under constant threat from vampires and other demonic forces. In this upcoming issue we’ll see the slayer discuss her options with her friends, including Robin, son of a former slayer, and it seems ultimately decide to not keep the baby. To know for sure you’ll have to check out issue #6.
And since I mentioned earlier this is a very touchy subject for just about everyone, Joss Whedon has had to come out defending his decision for the story line’s inclusion,
It’s not something we would ever take lightly, because you can’t. You don’t. It’s not an easy thing for anyone..
Buffy was always about the arc of a life, and it wasn’t ever going to be one of those shows where they were perpetually in high school and never asked why. It was about change. So there’s never a time when Buffy’s life isn’t relevant.
It’s not that women should be on one side or the other, but that people have to make this decision and talk about it. It offends me that people who purport to be discussing a decision that is as crucial and painful as any a young woman has to make won’t even say something that they think is going to make some people angry.
Obviously people are upset, mostly because the whole discussion of abortion and pregnancy in general makes people uncomfortable. But I think Joss has the right of it, while Buffy the Vampire Slayer has always has its fair share of action and slaying, it’s also about a young women growing up. I’m glad to see the comic tackling real world problems and issues, just like the television series did.

What do you think, is abortion too heavy of a topic for comic books?
